Developments and economic reasons for various technical changes in boiler controls which have occurred over the past 50 years are reviewed. Future potential directions - such as microprocessors, DDC, and use of Modern Control Theory - and the potential economic benefits which could result in changes to boiler control systems that come into use before the end of the next decade are suggested.
