The grain boundary segregation profile of potassium in SrTiO//3 ceramics was revealed using HR-TEM (high-resolution transmission electron microscopy) and STEM (scanning transmission electron microscopy). HR-TEM showed precipitation-free grain boundaries in the specimen. STEM chemical analysis data, and K/Ti, K/Sr and Sr/Ti X-ray intensity ratios indicated a potassium segregation layer of less than 20 nm wide at the grain boundaries and Sr-site occupancy by potassium. These properties were considered responsible for the nonohmic current-voltage characteristic, i. e. , varistor behavior, of the specimen.
