Part of the crucial arterial belt ringing Manhattan Island is in a state of monumental distrepair. Through neglect of maintenance, major sections of the elevated highway along Manhattan's west side have been closed to traffic for almost two years. As a result, traffic has been diverted to interior streets, producing frequent traffic jams. The author stresses that it is high time something were done to solve the problem and presents a practical proposal for restoring the highway.
