The advantages fo programmable control systems in industrial automation are pointed out. An evaluation is made of alternative control systems, such as microprocessors, relays, process contollers and mini computers. Only after defining the system and selecting a vendor can various aspects of the installation be engineered, including matching field devices with the appropriate input/output (I/O) interface, programming the controller memory to accomplish the required task, locating the control panels, routing the conduit and scheduling the installation start-up.
