A horizontal continuous billet casting machine is being installed for the production of stainless wire rod and seamless pipe based on the operation of research and pilot plant facilities. Design features discussed include tundish and mold connection (break ring characteristics), mold design and mold/billet lubrication as well as the effect of electromagnetic stirring. The application of 150 and 180-mm dia billets were evaluated on wire rod and seamless pipe applications, respectively, with respect to cold drawability, cold headability, machinability and surface and internal quality.
