A semi-continuous chromatographic refiner for the separation of glucose and fructose on a preparative scale is described. Counter-current operation was simulated by sequencing a system of inlet and outlet port functions around 12 25. 4 mm ID multiplied by 700 mm long stainless steel columns. Separation of a 50% (w/v) feed solution into a fructose rich and glucose rich products of purities of over 90% (w/w) have been achieved. Solid concentrations of approximately 10% (w/w) and 4. 5% (w/w) in the glucose rich and the fructose rich products have been achieved after having tried six different flow-arrangements. The maximum feed throughput was 75 gm/hr at a feed concentration of 50% (w/v). This system is amenable to scale up to units of production scale capacity.
