The electrical power subsystem of the Tracking and Data Relay Satellite System (TDRSS) includes batteries made of hermetically sealed nickel-cadmium cells to provide energy during earth eclipse and to limit the maximum bus voltage at exit from the eclipse. This paper presents the requirements imposed on the battery and a description of spacecraft and battery designs which were developed to meet these requirements.
