A study is made of large-scale quasi-geostrophic movements in a weakly stratified medium. A two-dimensional evolution equation with a cubic nonlinearity is derived for the amplitude of baroclinic Rossby waves in a weak shear flow. It is shown that this equation allows soliton-like solutions of both anticyclonic and cyclonic character.
