Despite the constant improvement in measuring apparatus and amelioration of its characteristics, the solution of many scientific and engineering problems is only possible at the limit of sensitivity of modern instruments, when the measurement accuracy is low because of the considerable noise level. In a series of cases (for example, in problems of laser probing of the atmosphere), the basic source of noise is outside the measuring instrument, and improving the instrument has little effect on the recording conditions. In such situations, importance attaches to mathematical treatment of the measurement results, consisting in smoothing the recorded signal to increase the signal/noise ratio.
