In this work we investigated the possibility of the adsorption of cobalt(II) on cadmium hydroxide from alkaline cobalt-containing solutions and the electrochemical conversions of cobalt(II) compounds accompanying the functioning of the cadmium electrode during cycling. It was established that the cobalt(II) hydroxide introduced into the active material of a cadmium electrode while it is being charged is readily reduced to the metallic state already in the first cycle. The possibility of the reverse process, viz. , the oxidation of metallic cobalt during the discharging of the electrode, increases as the number of charging-discharging cycles is increased. The increase in the electrochemical reversibility of the Co, Co(OH)//2/OH** minus system during cycling is attributed to the direct interaction of the cobalt compounds with the active material of the cadmium electrode in both the charged and discharged states.
