摘要：

The worm gear of 15 m**3 slag car is used for tilting the blast furnace slag pot. The weight of worm wheel is 640 kg and its manufacturing cost is Rs 13,518. Its consumption is 155 pieces per year. The principles of value engineering were applied and finally a savings of Rs 340,000 per year was arrived at by separating the function 'transmit torque' from the rest of the functions. The project was approved by the management of Rourkela Steel Plant for implementation. Four numbers of modified worm gears have been used and their performance is under observation.
