The author shows that a concrete slab, supported by columns, will under certain shear stress conditions fail in such a way that the column punches the slab. Reference is made to this phenomenon for two-way flat slab floors. The punching is closely related with the shear force. A mathematical approach is presented to quantify the occuring shear forces.
