Functional plating is used not only for surface treatments, such as decorative finish and corrosion resistance, but also for certain specified purposes such as magnetization, abrasion resistance and lubrication. Because, in general, one metal-plating method is unsatisfactory for functional plating because of its limited use, new methods such as alloy plating, composite coating and ion plating have recently been utilized and applied to the electronics industry. This paper describes application examples and developments of functional plating.
