Problems involved in the desulfurization of fuels and flue gases are discussed from the viewpoint of future demand for power and of the operating conditions of fossil-fuel fired steam power plants. Analysis of desulfurization costs shows that they are similar in either case; desulfurization of heavy oil fuel can be, however, more easily carried out. Gasification of solid and liquid fuels is briefly referred to. 9 refs.
