Synthesis of poly(m-benzamide)s with alternating N-alkyl side chains by chain-growth polycondensation of 3-(alkylamino)benzoic acid dimer esters

We have reported the chain-growth polycondensation of m-(octylamino)benzoic acid dimer esters 1a-d to suppress the formation of the cyclic oligomers, and found the polymerization of the isopropyl ester le proceeded at -10°C to yield the polyamide with a low polydispersity. In this paper, we report the m-aminobenzoic acid dimer esters with different alkyl side chains on two nitrogen atoms to synthesize the alternating copolyamides. The polymerization of 3a proceeded at -10°C to yield the polyamide with a low polydispersity suppressing the formation of the cyclic oligomers. However, 3b polymerized very slowly at -10°C to give the polyamide with a broad polydispersity as well as a considerable amount of cyclic oligomers.
