An extensive collaborative research programme to examine the ultrasonic testing of ferritic steel weldments is now under way. The work involves manufacturing welded specimens with carefully controlled defects, testing them using a wide range of ultrasonic equipment and techniques and sectioning them. Limited results of the work so far conducted on butt welds containing non-planar defects are presented.
