General design criteria of mechanically actuated torque limiters are considered. Their basic purpose is to limit the amount of force exerted on driven equipment. The present basic kinds of mechanical torque limiters include: movable pawl and detent; ball and detent; and friction disc. All must be able to withstand various periods of overload or running in the disengaged position. Once re-engaged, they must continue to provide accurate torque-limiting protection. Each type of mechanical torque limiters is discussed in turn.
