An overview of earthquake engineering fundamentals is presented. The recording of ground acceleration during earthquakes, structural response to earthquakes, the effect of soil conditions on the surface ground motion, the dynamic behavior of soils, such as settlement of dry sands or liquefaction of saturated cohesive soils, is described. A description is given of the consequences of a number of severe earthquakes, their effect on buildings.
