Encouraged by the success of recent delineation wells, a group of oil companies led by Petro-Canada is weighing development prospects for Terra Nova field on the Grand Banks 220 miles east of St. Johns, Newfoundland. With a preliminary engineering study now underway to evaluate two floating production system (FPS) options, the group is hoping to decide by the end of the year whether to proceed with the project. In the latest of seven Terra Nova delineation tests to be completed, Well E-79 flowed 32-34° gravity crude oil at a combined rate of 25,000 bpd from three zones below 10,000 ft in the lower Jeanne d'Arc formation. The oil-bearing sands penetrated by the well proved thicker than Petro-Canada had expected, and the company believes the well could sustain production of 20,000 bpd.
