Until recently only a theoretical possibility, continuous simultaneous in vivo mass spectrometric monitoring of human arterial and venous blood gases and cerebral blood flow has been accomplished utilizing dual cycloidal analyzers and single ion pump vacuum system. Pumping characteristics, system background, and asystem time response are characterized and related to theoretical values. The heart of the system is a 40 mil outside diameter vascular catheter with a gas permeable membrane tip. Two catheter membranes are described.
