A theoretical discussion of the required conditions for hydrogen extraction from iron and steel is followed by the report of kinetic measurements of hydrogen extraction at 700 C to the melting point of steel. The coefficient of diffusion of hydrogen for steel specimens in the melting temperature range could be determined in a specially designed apparatus. The method is said to be suitable for very rapid control of the hydrogen content in steel melts; 150 sec/specimen is required.
