摘要
The advantages of drilling the channel under difficult crossings have been known to pipeline engineers for some time and have found a large number of applications in the United States. The technique, however, has been limited until now by the diameter of the pipeline to be laid. A new machine has just been developed which is capable of handling bores of up to 30 in. The new rig weighs 125 tons, is 80 ft wide without its removable walkways. The 80 ft lengths provide for 70 feet of travel, sufficient to accommodate 60 ft pipe joints. Its jacking capacity, 500 tons compared to 50 tons for earlier units, is a measure of the much greater capability. In order to utilize that capacity to the fullest a steel structure deadman is buried 7 ft below the surface. The two auxiliaries, the power and mud systems, are set over the deadman to provide additional weight. The power system consists of three 275 hp Caterpillar diesels. The mud system, with a capacity of 273 bbl, is equipped with desilters, desanders and a shaker screen. The rig can be set at any angle from 0 degrees to 30 degrees. Casing follows the articulated drilling head into the hole, The hole is in two sections joined by a flexible, accordion-type coupling.
