First results with the PACHA injection system

An original procedure for granular coal injection has been operating in the Patural plant since 1986. Satisfactory results of tests, insufficient local coking capacities and the differential cost between injection coal and fuel oil induced the management to ask the Patural blast furnace engineering department to devise a more competitive industrial application than equipment manufacturers' proposals. A comparative study of metallurgical results and quality of hot metal for three months during which the burden has been stable shows the benefit of coal injection versus fuel oil. After a one year continuous operation of Patural 6 blast furnace, no hearth or stack accretions have been noticed, and the gas purifying water was not loaded with soot. The hot metal had an improved sulphur content. The expenses are estimated at about 20 FF per ton of injection coal.
