Methods of selective methylation of the nitrogen atoms of the ethyl ester of 3-(1H-imidazol-4-yl)-2-pro-penoic acid are reported. The nitrogen atom α to the ethylenic chain was methylated after protection of the β nitrogen with a phenacyl group.
