This paper describes a simple method for hyphenation in German agreeing with the natural linguistic instinct. The principles are: simple words are hyphenated according to rules about sequences of vowels and consonants; compound words and words with prefixes are split into their components. The algorithm distinguishes main hyphenation points between independent parts of the compound and minor points within these components. Some words may be split in more than one way; every such ambiguity is discovered. By refusing these 'unsafe' words, the algorithm becomes resistant against wrong hyphenation. The method uses a table of all roots of words.
