By the end of the century 80% of British Gas customers will be supplied via PE (polyethylene) services. The industry must have equipment capable of detecting plastic pipe. British Gas has tested a one-man operated radar pipe locating instrument. The antenna is ground contacting and the system requires the operator to judge whether or not a pipe is present on the basis of interpreting a single measurement. Based on the results of these tests, the limitations of the instrument are discussed and some useful modifications are proposed.
