Williams Pipe Line operates the largest independently owned batched liquid petroleum products pipeline in the U. S. with more than 8,000 miles of lines, 117 pump stations, and 47 delivery terminals. Recent installation of a computerized leak-detection system on the 8,000 miles of line represents the largest such project in the U. S. The leak detection system computer hardware consists of a Data General MV-10000 minicomputer with a 354 megabyte (mb) hard disk and 8 mb of internal memory. The MV-10000 is rated at 2. 5 million instructions executed per second and has a cycle time of 140 nanoseconds. Two Aydin 2000 display generators drive five color monitors with a graphic resolution of 1,024 multiplied by 1,024 pixels and with an alphanumeric overlay channel (ANC) for text. The operator's input functions will be performed through five Aydin 5116 keyboards. The MV-10000 is linked to the existing TRW scada computer by a custom-built interface which provides the necessary parallel to serial conversion and handshaking to accomplish the data transfer.
