Dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) and dissolved organic phorphorus (DOP) are described as large and important fractions of oceanic nutrient pools, especially in euphotic zones. Their inclusion with itrate (NO//3) and phosphate (PO//4) to form total dissolved nitrogen and total dissolved phosphate improves the Redfield argument linking organism N:P values with NO//3:PO//4 values. This paper discusses the importance of DON and DOP to the nutrient economy of the ocean by using a modified Redfield approach.
