X-RAY K-ABSORPTION EDGE OF ZIRCONIUM IN SOME PEROVSKITE-TYPE ZIRCONATES.

The chemical shifts in the X-ray K-absorption edges of zirconium in the zirconates of calcium, strontium, barium and lead and zirconium oxide have been investigated employing a 400 mm bent crystal X-ray spectrograph. It has been found that the discontinuity shifts towards the high energy side with respect to that in the pure metal and that the chemical shift depends on the size of the next nearest cation. The larger the size of the cation, smaller is the chemical shift. Dependence of the shift on the crystal structure and the packing factor of the perovskite is also reported.
