The article addresses the use of material transfer vehicles to build smoother asphalt roads. The results of test jobs run in some cities are given. Use of MTVs helps ensure smoother pavements because they: allow the safe use of large trailers, allow inexperienced paving crews to produce good work, eliminate material segregation, give more uniform compaction, reduce labor required on the paving crew, produce consistently smooth pavement at higher production rates, while reducing the number of trucks required.
