In 1974 at the Rustavi Metallurgical Plant the Listokhod-1 reactive ultrasonic system with a UDM-1M standard flaw detector was put into industrial-experimental service for the on-line quality control of rolled sheet. The system reliably discloses segregate with an area of 15 multiplied by 15 mm at sheet temperatures up to 200 degree C. For sheet moving at a rate of 0. 5 m/sec lateral transverse scanning provides insonification of up to 50% of the sheet surface. The system utilizes a sliding-contact scheme for the input of ultrasound, yielding the same sensitivity as in the manual inspection of sheet in the cold state.
