The refrigeration requirements for the Strathmore shaft at Buffesofontein gold mine (South Africa) are discusssed. Various concepts of refrigeration presently in operation and proposed are discussed and a brief account is given of the mid-shaft cooling, chilled service water, bulk air cooling (spray chambers) and heat exchangers.
