New materials often lead to innovative types of structure which fulfill new functions or provide cost savings for at least the same degree of safety. Roller compacted concrete (RCC) is an example of a new material and technique which provides savings for new dam types. As RCC (or RCD, Roller Compacted Dam method) has practically replaced conventional vibrated concrete (CVC) in the construction of concrete gravity dams, gravity dams are now almost exclusively within the realm of earthmoving and compaction plant.
