A high percentage of the heat generated in fired heaters is lost in the fluegas. Much of this loss can be recovered by installing an air preheater. The authors develop a method to calculate heat balances, along with the appropriate temperatures, so that the projected annual cost of the preheater can be compared with the yearly energy savings.
