INFLUENCE OF FLOW DISTURBANCES ON THE LAMINAR-TURBULENT TRANSITION IN A SUPERSONIC BOUNDARY LAYER.

The results of experimental studies of the effect of various factors on the transition of a supersonic boundary layer are presented. It is shown that the scale of the acoustic disturbances, which is proportional to the displacement thickness of the boundary layer on the wall of the wind tunnel, influences the boundary-layer transition on the model in supersonic wind tunnels. The experimental data, measured over a wide range of flow parameters in aerodynamically similar tunnels with different working-section dimensions are satisfactorily generalized by means of a correlation parameter based on the displacement thickness of the tunnel-wall boundary layer.
