The paper discusses the properties and application of bromine in controlling fouling organisms in water cooling systems. The fresh water intakes contain algae, mushrooms, and bacteria which find very good environments in these systems for their rapid multiplication. By rapid multiplication they produce clogging and corrosion of the systems, and frequent cleaning and maintenance are required. Bromine in a water solution is injected into the cooling water, and its presence prevents the fouling organisms from damaging the equipment. Preparation of the bromine solutions and an apparatus for bromine solution injection into the system are described. The Bromostat is considered very good for modest size circuits.
