A brief history is given of the development of photoconductive camera tubes. Also discussed are: beam scanned tubes; antimony trisulfide vidicons; lead oxide tubes; the silicon diode array vidicon; the Chalnicon, Saticon, and Newvicon; charge-coupled devices; signal read-out and device construction; transfer efficiency; and future developments.
