Four large dams and one smaller one are being constructed to develop the hydro-electric power potential of the Pieman River system on the west coast of Tasmania. In spite of a range of site conditions, all five dams will be concrete faced rockfill embankments. Taking each dam component in turn, the paper describes the design requirements and the way they were met at each site. Some of the dams have been completed and measurements of their behavior are included. The paper represents the Australian Hydro-Electric Commission's current practice for this type of dam.
