A new gage control system has been developed to improve thickness accuracy in the unsteady state. The gate-compensated control system was used at the tandem cold mill at Kakogawa works from 1992. It has reduced the length of off gage at the welded points from 10 to 2 metres. The high- speed flying gage change system was applied in January 1993. It has increased productivity by approximately 1000 tonnes/month. This control contributes to the improvement of thickness accuracy, productivity and rolling stability.
