S. T. Wu (1980) showed the merge of Landsat MSS and Seasat radar imagery to provide improved subdivision in the classification of forested wetlands. This was attributed to improved discrimination of plant canopy configuration and vegetation density associated with varying water regimes. This study indicates the improvement to be due to the ability to sense the presence of standing water beneath the vegetation ability to sense the presence of screen. It appears that a radar system operating near the Seasat configuration offers an immediate application for mapping of both interior and coastal wetlands as well as for the monitoring of flood conditions. This may be accomplished for a wide range of forest coverage and totally independent of illumination or weather conditions.
