EXPERIMENTAL IMPROVEMENT OF THE RESOLUTION OF AN ISOLDE-TYPE ISOTOPE SEPARATOR.

The mass resolving power of an electromagneic isotope separator is more or less proportional to the width of the ion beam in front of the magnet (2X//1). To verify this, xenon mass spectra were studied using the off-line isotope separator at CERN (ISOLDE). The half-width of the mass lines was found to decrease with increasing X//1. It is recommended that a quadrupole doublet lens be placed close to the magnet entrance in order to improve the resolution of the isotope separator.
