α-C-glycosyl compounds have been obtained selectively from protected 2-acetamido-2-deoxy-D-glucose by a Wittig-type reaction and subsequent cyclization. We studied the behaviour of several pyranose and furanose derivatives of 2-acetamido-2-deoxy-D-glucose towards the Wittig-type reaction in the presence of zinc.
