Pressure rise in a closed container during the combustion of a localized gas volume

The combustion of a local volume of fuel gas in a closed container produces a pressure increase, which often constitutes the reason behind industrial accidents. The authors experimentally verified earlier theoretical work for the maximum developed pressure in combustion of a finite gas volume in a closed container. In addition previously obtained data on the combustion both of local volumes and in a completely filled container were also examined. Methane-air mixtures were studied by combustion in a thin rubber enclosure, with the maximum pressure developed measured. It was found that the experimental results, when correlated in accordance with theory, can be generalized by a single relationship.
