New polyester coating formulations of the flakefilled type can be applied in relatively thin films (20 mils or less) without curing shrinkage cracking and by conventional spray equipment. Flakefilled polyester systems are used in immersion, splash, spillage, and weathering conditions. Isophthalic polyesters are generally used for acid, salt, water, and weathering conditions. Bisphenol polyesters are generally used when both acid and alkali conditions may be expected. Because of their high film build per coat, flakefilled polyester coatings are applied in two coats. On a cost per square foot per year of service basis in chemical atmospheres, they are generally more economical than other protective coatings.
