A two-wire transmitter is an instrument with a ″live zero″ current output, which is connected to a power supply by only two wires. The current carried by the wires can be regarded as having two components: a constant pedestal component of, for example, 4 ma, which is used to power the instrument, plus a variable signal component of, for example, 0-16 ma which represents the value of the measured variable. Receiving units such as indicators, recorders or controllers are connected in series with the loop. An outline is presented of the difficulties encountered in designing a two-wire transmitter for providing temperature measuremkents from distant points, especially when these are within hazardous areas.
