The methods used to obtain coatings by diffusion saturation in melts of low-melting-point metals are based on the phenomenon of isothermal mass transport of dissimilar materials. The kinetics of isothermal mass transport in all phases of a system comprised of a diffusate, a transporting melt, and a product metal from the moment the latter is immersed in an unsaturated bath is examined. The goal is to determine the time until the establishment of an equilibrium concentration of diffusate on the product surface and the rate of formation of the coating (diffusion in the solid phase). An analytical relation is obtained and verified experimentally on the application of a nickel coating on specimens of Armco iron at 1000 degree C. It is found that the rate of change in the concentration on the surface of the coating and the kinetics of its formation in the latent period depend on the ratio of the surfaces of the diffusate and product.
