Two indexes for the evaluation of the ability of the self-steering wheelset and bogie respectively are suggested and educed for the first time. It gives a clear statement of the performance of the self-steering bogie. Based on the above indexes an extensive research was carried out both on a two axle bogie and a three axle power bogie. The principles of the radial guiding structure and the influences of dominated parameters were revealed with the help of these two indexes.
