Responding to external events as they occur, real-time computing systems efficiently monitor and control the operations of remote devices while seemingly simultaneously executing other significant proceessing functions. In the context of the GIMIX system, two applications are briefly mentioned. One is computer control of the heating system of a refining furnace. Another is a study of the effect of oxygen on the recovery and dissolution of ferroalloys in steelmaking.
