Forming and machining aluminum- boron composites

Why aluminum- boron is attractive for many structural applications. The composite studied consisted of 50% by volume of boron filament diffusion- bonded in a 6061- 0 aluminum matrix, and some of the cutting processes investigated included milling, grinding, abrasive cutoff, drilling, piercing, EDM, and ultrasonic impact grinding. Stretch forming and brake bending tests are reported. The problems encountered in all operations are pointed out and the test results analyzed.
