A mathematical model describing the radial filtration of a two-phase fluid has been developed from two linked partial differential equations. A continuity equation has been derived by equating the volume rate of flow into and out of a control volume for both the solid and the liquid phase, and integrating over all radii. Experiments were conducted on a Perspex model sector 1 m long 2 cm thick and varying linearly from 2. 5 cm wide at the inlet to 25 cm wide at the outlet. The relevance of the work to the design of radial filters, to the recharge of confined aquifers and to the design of pre-filters is discussed.
